Rabbit Hunting

A successful hunt with two standard wirehaired teckels

Dachshunds, large and small, greatly enjoy hunting rabbits. These smallest of hounds have excellent noses and are willing to settle down and use them to trail the little cottontail rabbit. Some dachshunds voice on the trail, others only speak to a jumped rabbit or a very hot line. With field experience a dachshund will circle a rabbit to a gun hunter. If the rabbit takes refuge in a tight place, such as a brush pile or very heavy cover, a dachshund can fit into these small spaces and make the rabbit flush. Dachshunds need to be broken off unwanted game such as deer and coyotes. They check in well and respond to commands if trained consistently, especially as pups.
